David Jess
David Jess was born in Lurgan in 1947 and has been a professional artist since 1994.
He has developed his own distinctive style and uses his strong sense of colour to the full in his landscapes. David says, “I begin with a spontaneous blocking-in of colour. trying not to paint directly what I observe. I then add some detail such as farm-houses and outbuildings. I am inspired by the Irish countryside, and the Mournes and Ulster drumlins provide a backdrop to many of my paintings. I want people to look at my work and experience an immediate feeling of joy and excitement but yet be able to return again and again and be surprised by some fresh little undiscovered detail.”
David lists among his influences Paul Klee and Marc Chagall. He works in acrylics and their luminosity suits his style.
He works from a secluded studio in the heart of the Co. Armagh countryside near Loughgall.
